When it comes to female music artists, one of Britain’s newest arrivals is Welsh soul singer Duffy. She was born Aimee Anne Duffy in Gwynedd, Wales on 23 June 1984. Her album, Rockferry, is currently the top selling album in the United Kingdom.
Forgive me for sounding cynical, but it seems to me that there are rather too many female music artists who are following a little too closely in the footsteps of the notorious Amy Winehouse. While it is plain that Duffy is talented and can sing well, she is not bringing anything new to the table. Her record company is obviously trying to cash in on the popularity of the Amy Winehouse sound. By the way, even Amy Winehouse herself is not at all unique. The music of both Amy Winehouse and Duffy reminds me of the Northern Soul sound that was popular in Britain in the 1960s.
It all makes me wonder if there will ever be any fresh female music artists that come up with a sound that it completely new. How many female music artists that sound similar to Amy Winehouse do we need?
